The first bank for blood of the umbilical cord for private use in Germany
Already in the early 1990s the immunologist and diabetes specialist Dr Eberhard Lampeter recognised while researching in the area of diabetes what potential stem cells have for autoimmune diseases. On the basis of these findings, he developed a routine method for storing the particularly valuable stem cells from the blood of the umbilical cord – and has set standards in doing so.

In 1997 Dr Lampeter founded in Leipzig Germany’s first bank for blood of the umbilical cord for private use: Vita 34. The name has an obliging meaning. Vita is the Latin word for life, the number 34 stands for the surface molecule CD 34, which characterises blood-forming stem cells. Vita 34 thus symbolises the responsibility and the commitment of the company and its employees to the protection of life.

The oldest bank for blood of the umbilical cord in Germany
In the meantime, Vita 34 has become the biggest bank for blood of the umbilical cord in Germany and is consistently expanding this position. The company, which is headed by the recognised pioneer in storing blood of the umbilical cord, Dr Eberhard Lampeter, is characterised by high-quality preparations, innovative processes and methods, qualified specialist staff, strictest security standards and alliances with strong partners.

In order to secure and further expand its position in the recovery, preparation and storage of stem cells in the long term, Vita 34 actively contributes to the development of the growth sector of regenerative medicine. To this end, Vita 34 supports the research initiatives of renowned universities, opinion-making scientists and leading research institutes.

Although a banking of umbilical cord blood has only become possible in recent years, and the owners of stem cell depots are still children, Vita 34 preparations could already be used in certain therapies.
